Chinese Company to Build Nine Mini-Hydropower Plants in Uzbekistan’s Andijan Region

Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade (MIIT) has signed an agreement with China’s Xinjiang Qianyuan Kunyu Construction Engineering to build nine mini-hydropower plants in the Andijan Region, the ministry’s press service announced on Telegram.

During a meeting in Tashkent, ministry representatives and the Chinese firm’s leadership discussed the technical aspects and next steps for constructing a cascade of small hydropower facilities along the rivers of the Central Asian republic.

As a result, the parties signed an investment agreement for the development of nine mini-hydropower plants on the Karadarya River in the Andijan Region. The project’s cost and expected completion dates have not been disclosed.

According to MIIT, Xinjiang Qianyuan Kunyu Construction Engineering was established in 2011. The company specializes in the construction of power transmission and distribution systems, as well as the development, investment, and management of renewable energy projects.

On April 8, MIIT announced separate deals with Chinese corporations to build wind and solar power plants in the country. Sany Renewables International Investment will construct a 1,000-megawatt wind farm in Karakalpakstan, while China Electrical Equipment International will develop a 500-megawatt solar power station in the Farish District of the Jizzakh Region.

The Karadarya River flows through Uzbekistan’s Andijan and Namangan Regions, as well as Kyrgyzstan’s Osh Region. It is one of the largest tributaries feeding into the Syr Darya.
