Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev welcomed Paraguayan President Santiago Peña at his residence in Tashkent, calling the meeting historic as it marks the first visit by a Latin American head of state to the Central Asian republic, the Uzbek leader’s press service reported.
The leaders discussed prospects for further strengthening practical cooperation between Uzbekistan and Paraguay. Both presidents noted that the summit would open a new chapter in the development of friendly relations between the two countries.
Key areas of bilateral partnership expansion were addressed, including trade and economic relations, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, and other spheres.
Special attention was given to increasing mutual trade, developing business contacts, and implementing joint projects in agriculture, the food industry, chemical production, digitalization, tourism, and sports.
Mirziyoyev and Peña confirmed their readiness to continue political dialogue and deepen practical cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Following the Tashkent meeting, the presidents signed a Joint Statement.
In addition, in the presence of both heads of state, other agreements were finalized, including a Protocol concluding bilateral negotiations on market access as part of Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a mechanism for political consultations at the level of foreign ministries.
