The United Nations General Assembly adopted by majority vote a draft resolution in support of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. However, Central Asian states — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan — abstained, while Turkmenistan did not participate in the vote, according to information published on the UN News Service’s account on X.

In total, 107 countries voted in favor of the document, titled in the Russian-language UN press release “Maintaining a Comprehensive, Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine.” Twelve states voted against, including Russia, Belarus, Cuba, Nicaragua, Iran, and North Korea, along with several African states. Fifty-one countries abstained, including most Central Asian republics.

Among those abstaining were the United States of America, despite Washington’s continued assistance to Ukraine and its active calls for a cessation of hostilities, positioning itself as a mediator in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

The session at which the resolution was adopted was initiated by Ukraine with the support of Denmark, Latvia, Greece, United Kingdom, and France. The meeting was timed to coincide with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale military operation in Ukraine.

The resolution reaffirms the General Assembly’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters. It also welcomes efforts by the United States and European states aimed at ending the military confrontation.

The document further reiterates calls for an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia; the establishment of a lasting peace in accordance with international law; a comprehensive exchange of prisoners of war and the release of unlawfully detained persons; and the return of forcibly displaced or deported civilians, including children.
